The Experience
Every French ruler from the 12th century to Napoleon III lived at Fontainebleau, and each one added a wing. Walking through it is like walking through eight hundred years of French taste, with a fraction of the crowds at Versailles.
We see the Gallery of François I, where the Renaissance arrived in France, Henri II's ballroom, Napoleon's throne room, still furnished, and the rooms where he signed his first abdication. Then the Cour des Adieux, where he said goodbye to his Old Guard in 1814.
After lunch in town, we walk the gardens and the carp pond. It's forty minutes from Gare de Lyon by train, and I travel with you.
