The Experience

Lille feels like another country: Flemish brick, gilded façades and a table you won't find in Paris. It's an hour away by high-speed train, which makes it a perfect day out.

We start on the Grand-Place and in the courtyard of the Vieille Bourse, then walk Old Lille with tasting stops: the vanilla waffles of Meert, a Maroilles cheese shop, and a long lunch of carbonnade flamande in an estaminet.

In the afternoon, the Palais des Beaux-Arts, from Rubens to Goya, and its astonishing models of fortified cities. Back in Paris for dinner.
